Can I get my driver licence on my 17th birthday?
The answer is ‘yes, it’s possible’. However, you will need to do a few things long before
your birthday rolls around. Most importantly, you will need to have got your L’s on your 16th birthday (best of luck with that one) so that you have waited the minimum one year before getting your P’s. Likewise, you will also need to have completed your logbook, and have it approved before you can do the driving test.
You can now
submit your logbook to the Department of Transport and Man Roads (TMR) for
approval before you turn 17. People were
previously required to be 17 before submitting their logbook, however TMR are
now receiving and approving logbooks submitted by people prior to their 17th
birthday.
No doubt, you have spent a lot of time &
energy, apart from the task of driving, filling in the logbook with 100 hours
including 10 hours of night driving. You
will need to spend a little time checking through your logbook before sending
it off.
Some things
worth checking:
- The amount of hours – check your adding up so you get the right amount, & have a few extra hours filled in just in case you have miscalculated something.
- Use a pen –make sure that all entries are written in pen, not pencil, and can be easily read.
- Complete & sign the Driving Experience Declaration in the logbook – the witness to your signature must hold a current Queensland open driver licence.
To make the
deadline of getting your licence on your 17th birthday, you will
need to submit your logbook early enough for the Department of Transport and
Main Roads to approve it before your driving test. Without approval, you could risk losing your
test booking fee.
Submitting
your logbook is easy - take your learner logbook to any Australia Post office
for it to be sent to the Department of Transport and Main Roads for approval. It takes at least 12 business days for DTMR
to receive and process your logbook. You
will be notified of the result by mail.
In addition to this you can also be notified by email, SMS or phone – select
your preference on the Driver Experience Declaration. If, in the situation your logbook was in any
way incomplete, it would be returned for you to complete.
Remember, if
you're unsure about your driving test, it can be helpful to get a professional
instructor to put you through the paces and give you some practical driving
test tips first. Book a series of
lessons and a lesson & test package with an approved driving school.
The instructor from Port Macquarie Driving School was incredibly patient with me, even when I had no idea how to drive a stick shift. The cars come with dual pedals (driver and passenger) so driving lessons were really safe.
